10 Day Kenya Safari Itinerary

Ten days in Kenya is enough time to cover three genuinely different safari ecosystems without rushing any of them. Most travellers return wishing they had gone longer. Very few wish they had gone shorter.

10 Day Kenya Safari Itinerary

A three-park itinerary covering Masai Mara, Amboseli, and Samburu works because each park is radically different from the others. The Mara is open savanna, big predator action, and the world’s largest wildlife migration. Amboseli is flat open floodplain, elephant herds, and Kilimanjaro rising behind everything. Samburu is semi-arid thornbush holding species found nowhere in southern Kenya. Together they give you a complete picture of what this country actually looks like.

Why Three Parks Work Better Than One

A single-park Kenya safari is excellent. But it delivers one landscape and one wildlife palette. Three parks across 10 days give you three answers to the same question: what does Kenya look like?

The variety also works in your favour logistically. Each new park resets your attention. By day 7 in a single park, even excellent wildlife can start to feel repetitive. Moving ecosystems keeps every drive fresh.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Days 1-2: Samburu National Reserve

Start with Samburu. Most itineraries end there, which means travellers arrive tired. Beginning here while energy is high makes a significant difference to how much you absorb.

Samburu sits about 6 hours north of Nairobi by road, or 45 minutes by light aircraft from Wilson Airport. The Ewaso Ng’iro River runs through the reserve and draws elephant, lion, leopard, and crocodile year-round.

Day 1: Arrive by air or road. Afternoon game drive along the river.

Day 2: Full day in Samburu. Morning and afternoon drives focused on the Samburu Special Five: reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, gerenuk, and Somali ostrich. These species do not appear in Masai Mara or Amboseli.

Recommended accommodation: Elephant Bedroom Camp (mid-luxury, river frontage), Elephant Watch Camp (conservation-focused), Samburu Intrepids (solid mid-range).

Days 3-5: Masai Mara National Reserve

Transfer from Samburu to the Mara, most efficiently by connecting flight via Wilson Airport. The road option is possible but adds a full day of driving.

Three nights gives you six game drives plus the option of one early-morning balloon flight over the plains.

Day 3: Arrive Mara by afternoon flight. Check in, evening drive.

Day 4: Full day in the Mara. Morning drive targeting predators in the open grassland. Afternoon drive to the Mara River for potential river action (July to October is the peak crossing window). Sundowner on the plains.

Day 5: Early morning drive before transfer. Fly to Nairobi, connect to Amboseli.

What to expect: Lions are seen on most drives in the Mara. Cheetah sightings are common. Leopard takes patience but appears regularly in the fig trees along the Talek River. Elephant herds move through from the adjacent conservancies throughout the year.

Recommended accommodation: Rekero Camp (Mara River location, luxury), Governors’ Camp (iconic, strong guiding), Mara Intrepids (reliable mid-range).

Days 6-8: Amboseli National Park

Amboseli is the most visually dramatic of the three parks. Three nights gives you time to photograph elephants at first light, at midday with the mountain behind them, and at golden hour when the dust catches the colour.

Day 6: Arrive Amboseli by road from Nairobi (3.5 hours) or by short flight. Afternoon at the Ol Tukai swamp area.

Day 7: Full day in Amboseli. Morning drive for Kilimanjaro views and elephant herds (mountain is clearest before 9 AM). Afternoon drive to Enkongo Narok swamp, where large bull elephants congregate late in the day.

Day 8: Dawn game drive, then mid-morning transfer to Nairobi.

What to expect: Amboseli has Africa’s most studied elephant population, with over 50 years of continuous research records. The bulls here are some of the largest-tusked animals left in Kenya. Lion and cheetah are present but less reliably sighted than in the Mara. Kilimanjaro is clear on approximately 70% of dry-season mornings.

Recommended accommodation: Tawi Lodge (private, high-end, outside the park boundary), Ol Tukai Lodge (strong elephant-viewing position, family rooms), Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge (well-run mid-range).

Days 9-10: Nairobi and Departure

Allow two full days in Nairobi at the end rather than rushing straight to the airport.

Day 9: Nairobi National Park in the morning (the only national park inside a major city). Elephants and rhino with the skyline visible behind them. David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in the afternoon for the elephant orphan feeding at 11 AM.

Day 10: Depart from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Optional additions on Day 9: Karen Blixen Museum, the Giraffe Centre at the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife, or shopping in the Karen suburb.

The best overall window is July to October, when the Masai Mara migration aligns with dry conditions in Samburu and Amboseli. This is also peak booking season: camps fill 6 months in advance.

January to February offers the second-best combination. Kilimanjaro views in Amboseli are clear, predator activity in the Mara is strong, and prices are 15 to 25% lower than peak.

Pacing Notes

Flight connections: Every park transfer adds at least half a travel day. This itinerary uses internal flights between Samburu and the Mara to avoid a 12-hour road day. Budget versions of this itinerary sometimes combine road transfers, but this significantly increases fatigue.

Game drive schedule: Standard drives run 6 AM to 9:30 AM and 4 PM to 7 PM. This itinerary is designed for two drives per day with a midday rest, which keeps energy levels consistent from day 1 to day 9.

Altitude: None of these parks involves significant altitude. Fatigue comes from early mornings and corrugated park roads. Good camp bedding matters more than most travellers expect.
