The Masai Mara sits about 270 km southwest of Nairobi, and there are exactly two sensible ways to cover that distance: five to six hours by road via Narok, or 40 to 45 minutes by scheduled flight from Wilson Airport.

The dashed line on the map traces the road route with its key waypoints; the reserve boundary shows where the driving ends and the game drives begin.

The drive, stage by stage

Stage one is smooth: tarmac out of Nairobi, down the Rift escarpment with its viewpoint stops, and on to Narok in about three hours. Narok is the last real town, so it is the fuel, cash and supplies stop. Stage two is the honest part: the stretch from Narok to Sekenani Gate mixes worn tarmac with rough murram, and takes another two to three hours depending on season and recent rain. In the wet months a 4×4 is not optional.

Drive or fly?

Driving costs less, shows you the Rift Valley, and gives you a vehicle in the Mara. Flying converts most of a travel day into an extra game drive, which matters on short itineraries. A popular compromise is driving in and flying out. Flight logistics depend on which airstrip serves your camp; the Nairobi to Mara flight guide covers schedules and strips, and the Masai Mara safari map shows all eight airstrips.
