The short answer: the Masai Mara is in southwest Kenya, in Narok County, pressed against the Tanzanian border about 270 km from Nairobi. The longer answer, which the map below makes obvious, is that it is the Kenyan end of something much bigger.

South of the border line, the same grassland continues as Tanzania’s Serengeti. The two names describe one ecosystem split by an international boundary that the wildebeest ignore entirely.

One ecosystem, two countries

The Mara is the smaller, wetter, northern tip of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. That geography is why the migration “arrives” in Kenya each July: the herds simply follow the rain gradient north until they cross an invisible line on the map. It is also why you cannot drive between the two parks; there is no tourist border crossing inside the ecosystem, so combining them means routing through official crossings well to the east. The Mara versus Serengeti comparison weighs the two sides properly.

Placing it in a trip

From Nairobi the Mara is a five to six hour drive or a 45-minute flight, which makes it the anchor of most Kenya itineraries rather than a side trip. The route map breaks down the journey, and the Masai Mara safari map zooms into the reserve and its conservancies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What country is the Masai Mara in?

Kenya. It sits in the far southwest of the country, in Narok County, along the border with Tanzania.

Is the Masai Mara the same as the Serengeti?

No, but they are physically joined. The Mara is the Kenyan portion and the Serengeti the much larger Tanzanian portion of one continuous ecosystem.

How do you get to the Masai Mara?

From Nairobi: about 270 km by road via Narok (five to six hours) or a 40 to 45 minute scheduled flight from Wilson Airport.

Can you drive from the Masai Mara into the Serengeti?

Not directly; there is no tourist border crossing inside the ecosystem. Combined trips route through official border posts further east.
