The road from Nairobi to the Masai Mara takes 5-7 hours. The flight takes 45 minutes. For most travellers with limited days in the bush, the arithmetic is straightforward — but “fly to the Mara” covers a decision with genuine consequences.
Three scheduled carriers serve the route. The Mara ecosystem has nine active airstrips spread across the main reserve, the Mara Triangle, and the private conservancies. The carrier you book and the airstrip you land at determines how your first game drive begins and which camps you can reach without an additional road transfer.
The Three Carriers
Safarilink Aviation
Safarilink is the largest scheduled bush flight operator in Kenya and the carrier most Mara camps recommend by default. It operates Cessna Grand Caravan and Beechcraft 1900 aircraft from Wilson Airport in Nairobi.
Airstrips served: Keekorok, Ol Kiombo, Musiara, Olare Orok, Mara North, Mara Serena, Angama, Naboisho, and Sekenani. Safarilink is the only scheduled carrier serving conservancy-specific airstrips (Musiara, Mara North, Naboisho, Olare Orok).
Frequency: Multiple daily departures from Wilson Airport, typically around 07:00, 09:00, and some midday slots. Return frequencies are similar.
Reliability: Strong, with consistent scheduling. Weather cancellations during heavy rain seasons occur but are uncommon.
Luggage: 15 kg soft-bag limit per person, strictly enforced. Hard-shell suitcases are not accepted.
AirKenya Express
AirKenya is a reliable alternative with competitive scheduling and a good safety record.
Airstrips served: Keekorok, Ol Kiombo, and Mara Serena primarily. Coverage is narrower than Safarilink — AirKenya does not serve the private conservancy airstrips directly.
Frequency: Multiple daily departures; the 07:10 Wilson departure is a popular slot for guests aiming to arrive in time for a morning game drive.
Luggage: Same 15 kg soft-bag limit applies.
Fly540
Fly540 operates turboprop aircraft and covers selected Mara airstrips at a generally lower price point.
Airstrips served: Keekorok and Ol Kiombo as primary destinations. Less conservancy coverage.
Frequency: Less frequent than Safarilink and AirKenya on Mara routes.
Best use: Fly540 works well if your camp is near Keekorok or in the main reserve and cost is the primary consideration.
Mara Airstrips: Which One Do You Need?
This is the question most booking guides skip. The airstrip determines your transfer time to camp and which game zone your first afternoon covers.
| Airstrip | Zone | Camps Typically Served | Transfer to Camp |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keekorok | Main Reserve (east) | Keekorok Lodge, nearby camps | 15-30 min |
| Ol Kiombo | Main Reserve (central) | Governors’ Camp, Little Governors’, Serian | 15-45 min |
| Musiara | Mara Triangle | &Beyond Kichwa Tembo, Governor’s | 10-20 min |
| Mara North | Mara North Conservancy | Elephant Pepper, Offbeat Mara, Kicheche | 10-15 min |
| Olare Orok | Olare Motorogi Conservancy | Mahali Mzuri, Porini Lion, Mara Kempinski | 10-20 min |
| Naboisho | Mara Naboisho Conservancy | Asilia Naboisho, Eagle View, Kicheche Valley | 10-15 min |
| Angama | Oloololo Escarpment | Angama Mara | 5 min |
| Mara Serena | Main Reserve (west) | Mara Serena Safari Lodge | 10 min |
| Sekenani | Main Reserve (south) | Multiple bush camps | 20-45 min |
Critical rule: Always confirm your camp’s preferred airstrip before booking the flight. A camp in Mara North reached via a flight landing at Keekorok means an additional 60-90 minute road transfer — unnecessary if Safarilink’s Mara North service is available on your dates.
Costs
Scheduled one-way fares from Nairobi to the Mara vary by season and booking lead time:
| Carrier | One-Way Approximate (per person) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Safarilink | USD 180-240 | Varies by season and airstrip |
| AirKenya | USD 170-230 | Slightly lower for main reserve airstrips |
| Fly540 | USD 150-200 | Less consistent availability |
For a couple flying return, budget USD 700-1,000 for flights alone. Booking return seats simultaneously with outbound tickets is advisable — return availability in peak July-September season is limited.
Wilson Airport to Camp: The Full Journey
Getting to Wilson: Wilson Airport is 20-30 minutes from Nairobi CBD in normal traffic. From JKIA, allow 30-45 minutes. If you arrive on an international flight and plan a Wilson departure the same or next morning, plan to be at your Nairobi hotel the evening before.
Check-in at Wilson: Arrive at least 45 minutes before departure. The terminal is small and informal. Safarilink and AirKenya have dedicated check-in counters.
Luggage: Pack in a soft duffel bag. Most camps can road-transfer excess luggage stored at Wilson, though this adds cost and complexity. Pack light and pack soft.
In the air: Flight time is 45-55 minutes Nairobi to the Mara, depending on whether your service stops at an intermediate airstrip. Some Safarilink flights serve multiple Mara airstrips on a single route.
Landing: Mara airstrips are grass runways. Smooth in dry season, occasionally bumpy after rain. Your camp’s vehicle meets you at the airstrip, and the transfer to camp frequently doubles as the first game drive of the trip.
When Driving Makes More Sense
The 5-7 hour overland transfer is not always the wrong choice:
- Budget travellers: The flight cost is real, and on a longer safari with several days of game drives ahead, the road saving goes directly to budget elsewhere.
- Heavy luggage: Photographers and families with children’s gear who cannot fit into a 15 kg soft bag limit are better served by road.
- Scenic routing: The drive via Narok provides its own landscape experience — the Rift Valley floor, Naivasha views, and the Maasai agricultural lands along the way.
For stays of three nights or more, the round-trip time cost of two overland transfers is one full additional day’s worth of game drives. That is the clearest argument for flying.
What to Confirm Before Booking
- Your camp’s home airstrip — confirm with the camp directly or through your booking channel
- Carrier schedule for your specific dates — Safarilink publishes seasonal timetables
- Luggage limits — pack before you confirm, not after
- JKIA-to-Wilson transfer timing if connecting from an international flight — allow a minimum of 3 hours for customs, baggage, road transfer, and Wilson check-in
- Return seat availability — book return simultaneously with outbound, especially for July-September peak travel
Book at least 6-8 weeks ahead for peak season travel. Morning departures to the Mara fill first.
