Amboseli is a small park with an enormous backdrop. At 392 km² it is a fraction of the size of Tsavo or the Serengeti, yet its position at the northern foot of Mount Kilimanjaro gives it the most recognisable skyline in African safari travel.

The map below shows how compact the geography really is: the park boundary, the swamps that keep its elephant herds anchored, the two airstrips, and Kilimanjaro’s national park sitting just across the border in Tanzania.

Why the swamps matter more than the size

Meltwater from Kilimanjaro filters underground and surfaces inside Amboseli as a chain of permanent swamps. They are the reason a park this small supports elephant herds this large, and they explain the daily rhythm you will see on a visit: herds walking from the dry lake bed into the swamps each morning and back out at dusk. Game drives loop around those swamp edges, so distances inside the park are short.

Getting there

By road it is about 240 km from Nairobi, roughly four hours via the Emali turn-off on the Mombasa highway. By air, scheduled flights from Wilson Airport take about 45 minutes to the Amboseli airstrip inside the park. There is a second airfield at Tawi just outside the southeastern boundary. The Nairobi to Amboseli route map breaks the drive down stop by stop.
