Amboseli lies about 240 km south of Nairobi, and the drive is one of the easier safari transfers in Kenya: around four hours, most of it on the main Mombasa highway before the turn south at Emali.

The dashed line below traces that route; the park boundary and Kilimanjaro’s bulk across the border show where you are heading.

The dashed line is the road route via Emali. Tap the park boundary for details; Kilimanjaro sits across the Tanzanian border. Park boundaries: protected-area data © UNEP-WCMC WDPA and © OpenStreetMap contributors.

The drive, stage by stage

From Nairobi the A104/A109 highway runs southeast through open Maasai country to Emali, about two hours of straightforward tarmac. At Emali the route turns south onto the C102 towards Oloitokitok, with the final approach to the park gates on rougher murram. A saloon car can manage in the dry season with care; in or after rain, take a 4×4. Most safaris enter through Kimana or Meshanani gates depending on where the night’s camp sits.

Flying instead

Scheduled flights from Wilson Airport reach the Amboseli airstrip inside the park in about 45 minutes. Because the drive is only four hours, flying buys less here than it does on the Mara run, so road transfers remain the default for most Amboseli itineraries. The Amboseli by air guide covers when the flight makes sense, and the drive guide details the stops.
