Tsavo is the piece of the Kenya map most people underestimate. Together, Tsavo East and Tsavo West cover around 22,000 km², which makes the combined complex one of the largest protected areas in Africa and bigger than some countries visitors fly over to reach it.

The two parks are split by the busiest transport corridor in the region: the Nairobi-Mombasa highway and railway. That line, clearly visible on the map, is also what makes Tsavo the natural bridge between an inland safari and the coast.

East and West are genuinely different parks

Tsavo East is the bigger, flatter, drier half, famous for elephants stained red by its dust and for enormous horizons. Tsavo West is hillier and more scenic, with volcanic cones, lava flows and the clear pools of Mzima Springs, plus a rhino sanctuary. Comparing the two properly is worth doing before you commit; the Tsavo East guide and Tsavo West guide cover each in depth.

Using Tsavo as a corridor

From Nairobi, Mtito Andei gate (Tsavo West) is about 232 km and Voi gate (Tsavo East) about 325 km along the same highway. From the coast, Tsavo East’s Bachuma gate is only around 100 km from Mombasa, which is why two-day safaris from Diani and Mombasa beaches are so common. If your trip pairs bush and beach, routing it through Tsavo turns transit time into safari time.
