Northwest of Nairobi, the floor of the Great Rift Valley carries a chain of lakes that make up Kenya’s most compact safari circuit. Some are freshwater (Naivasha, Baringo), some are soda (Nakuru, Elementaita, Bogoria), and the difference decides everything about what lives on them.
The map below lays the chain out in driving order from Nairobi, with Hell’s Gate and Lake Nakuru’s parks drawn to their boundaries.

Freshwater or soda: why the lakes differ
Freshwater lakes support hippos, fish and fish eagles; Naivasha’s boat trips and Crescent Island walks exist because of that. The soda lakes grow the algae that flamingos feed on, which is why the big pink flocks concentrate on Bogoria, Nakuru and Elementaita and ignore Naivasha entirely. The Lake Naivasha guide and Lake Nakuru guide cover the two anchors of the circuit.
A circuit that fits in two days
Naivasha and Hell’s Gate sit 90-100 km from Nairobi, Nakuru about 163 km, Bogoria roughly 250 km. Because the stops line up along one road, the classic pattern is a night at Naivasha with cycling in Hell’s Gate, then Nakuru’s rhinos the next morning, adding Bogoria only if flamingos are the priority. It is the easiest genuine safari circuit to bolt onto a longer Kenya route, or to run standalone from the capital.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Rift Valley lake has the flamingos?
The soda lakes: Bogoria most reliably today, with Nakuru and Elementaita also hosting flocks. The birds move between them with water and algae conditions.
How far are the Rift Valley lakes from Nairobi?
Naivasha is about 90 km, Nakuru about 163 km and Bogoria about 250 km, all along the same A104 corridor.
Can you walk or cycle anywhere on this circuit?
Yes, Hell’s Gate National Park allows both, through the gorge and beneath its volcanic cliffs. Crescent Island on Naivasha offers guided walking among plains game.
Is Lake Nakuru still worth it for flamingos?
Numbers fluctuate since rising water levels changed the lake’s chemistry, but the park remains Kenya’s most reliable rhino sighting and an excellent compact park regardless.
