Kenya does not have one best time to visit; it has a best time per region, and they do not always line up. The dry season from June to October is the safest all-round answer, but the right month depends on whether your priority is the migration, flamingos, Kilimanjaro views or calm seas for snorkelling.

The map below shows the regions this timing logic applies to. Pair it with the month-by-month table underneath.

The two rains set the calendar

Everything hangs on two rainy seasons: the long rains from roughly March to May and the short rains around November. Between them come the two windows most safaris use: the long dry season (June to October) with cool, dusty, high-concentration game viewing, and the short green window (January to February) with hot bright days, newborn plains game and fewer vehicles.

Matching months to priorities

Migration river crossings favour August and September in the Mara. Kilimanjaro is clearest from Amboseli at dawn in the dry months. Flamingo flocks shift between the soda lakes year-round. The coast runs its own schedule: seas are calmest and clearest from October to March. For the full month-by-month reasoning, see the best time to visit Kenya guide and the migration route map.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to visit Kenya for a safari?

June to October for the classic dry-season safari, with the migration in the Mara from July to October. January and February are an excellent quieter alternative.

When is the wildebeest migration in Kenya?

The herds are usually in the Masai Mara from July to October; river crossings peak around August and September.

Is the rainy season worth visiting?

Often yes. The March to May long rains mean green scenery, strong birding and the year’s lowest prices, at the cost of muddy bush roads and some camp closures.

When is the Kenya coast at its best?

October to March, when the sea is calmest and clearest for snorkelling and diving, conveniently overlapping the inland dry seasons on either side.
