The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Nairobi nursery hand-rears orphaned elephant calves before reintroducing them to the wild in Tsavo. The daily 11am public hour, when the keepers bring the orphans in to feed, is one of Kenya’s most moving wildlife encounters.

It sits inside Nairobi National Park’s forest edge and slots neatly into a city day tour with the park’s morning game drive and the Giraffe Centre.
