Amboseli National Park has three main gates used by visitors: Iremito (also referred to as Meshanani on some maps and signboards), Kimana, and Meshanani. The naming can be confusing because “Meshanani” appears in different sources to refer to different gates or overlapping gate areas. This guide uses the most commonly applied distinctions and maps them to the access routes and lodge positions that matter for planning.

Choosing the right gate reduces drive time inside and outside the park on transfer day, ensures smooth vehicle registration, and positions you efficiently relative to your accommodation. It is a small planning detail with a noticeable effect on the quality of the arrival day.
The Three Main Gates
Iremito Gate (Northern Boundary)
Iremito is on the park’s northern edge and is accessed from the Emali approach road — the primary Nairobi-Amboseli road corridor. Most camps and lodges in the Ol Tukai and central swamp area are accessed via this gate or via the related northern boundary entry points.
Best for:
- Camps in the Ol Tukai zone and central park
- Travellers arriving from Nairobi via Emali
- First-time visitors who want the most direct route to the central wildlife area
Access road condition: Murram from the main Emali road south of Kimana town. Manageable for 4WD vehicles in most conditions.
Kimana Gate (Eastern Boundary)
Kimana Gate is on the eastern side of the park, accessible via Kimana town, which is reached from Emali. It sits near the Kimana Wildlife Sanctuary, which some camps use as a complementary game-drive area. Kimana is also the departure point for itineraries linking Amboseli to Tsavo West — travellers continuing onward into Tsavo typically exit via Kimana Gate and head east on the road toward Tsavo West’s Chyulu Gate.
Best for:
- Camps on the eastern or southeastern park boundary
- Amboseli-to-Tsavo itineraries
- Travellers wanting access to the Kimana Wildlife Sanctuary area
- Nairobi arrivals via the Emali corridor who are staying in eastern-zone camps
Access road condition: The Kimana area is one of the better-maintained approach routes to the park. Tarmac reaches Kimana town; the short final approach to the gate is murram.
Meshanani Gate (Western/Southern Boundary)
Meshanani Gate sits on the park’s western or southwestern boundary and is accessed from the Namanga direction — the road south toward the Kenya-Tanzania border. It is less commonly used by Nairobi-based travellers on a standard Amboseli safari but suits two specific itinerary types: camps on the western side of the park, and travellers arriving from Tanzania via the Namanga border crossing.
Best for:
- Western-side lodge and camp positions
- Cross-border arrivals from Tanzania
- Travellers driving from southern Rift Valley or Kajiado side
- Itineraries linking Kenya and Tanzania safari circuits
Access road condition: The approach from the A104 Namanga Road involves murram tracks that can be rough, particularly after rain. Verify conditions and gate access with your specific camp before transfer day.

Park Entry Fees
Non-resident fees apply to all international visitors entering Amboseli National Park. Current fees published by Kenya Wildlife Service:
- Adults (non-resident): USD $90 per day
- Children (non-resident, under 18): USD $45 per day
- Residents: Kenya shilling rates apply (significantly lower)
Fees are paid in advance or at the gate via the KWS eCitizen platform or KWSPay system. All major lodges and operators arrange park fee payment as part of the booking process — confirm with your operator whether fees are included in your package or payable separately.
Important: Cash payment is no longer the standard at park gates. KWS expects digital payment via eCitizen/KWSPay. Operators booking vehicles in advance handle this through fleet accounts. Independent travellers should set up eCitizen accounts before travel.
Gate Registration Process
All vehicles entering Amboseli are registered at the gate. This involves:
- Vehicle registration and occupant details logged
- Park fee verification (pre-paid via eCitizen or operator account)
- Gate-to-gate recording of vehicle entry and intended exit
The registration process takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on queue at arrival time. Early morning arrivals (6 to 7am) can involve queues as multiple vehicles enter at the same time. Build this into transfer day timing.
Which Gate Suits Common Itinerary Types
Standard Nairobi-Amboseli road safari (2-3 nights, central park camps): Enter via Iremito Gate from the Emali approach. Most efficient routing for first-time visitors and camps in the Ol Tukai or central zone.
Amboseli to Tsavo West overland itinerary: Enter Amboseli via Iremito or Kimana Gate from Nairobi side. Exit Amboseli via Kimana Gate, then drive east to Tsavo West Chyulu Hills Gate.
Tanzania-to-Kenya crossing into Amboseli: Enter via Meshanani Gate from the Namanga direction. No need to go to Nairobi first. Confirm gate road conditions and border timing with your operator.
Western-side lodge or conservancy stay: Enter via Meshanani Gate if approaching from the south, or discuss with your camp whether there is a more practical entry point based on their specific location.
Practical Notes
Confirm gate with your camp before transfer day. The park’s internal road network means different lodges genuinely suit different gates, and some camps have strong preferences based on which approach produces the best timing for their operations. Do not assume the same gate works for all Amboseli destinations.
Naming inconsistency: “Iremito” and “Meshanani” are used interchangeably in some sources and as distinct gates in others. When confirming with your lodge, use their preferred terminology rather than assuming standard naming.
Gate hours: 6:00am to 6:30pm daily. No entry after 6:30pm.
4WD vehicle required for all approach roads beyond tarmac sections.
